It is now 11:34 on Sunday night and in just a few minutes this experience will be over. When I first started, I wasn’t sure how I was going to get 200 mentor hours on top of working 90+ hours a week. I also had concerns about whether I could succeed or not. Being in the classroom was a different experience for me. While I do serve as a mentor for people, it is in my field. Did I have what it took to mentoring outside my area of expertise?
Now as I look back, all of my concerns were unfounded. Yes, the hours were tough to get and I had to cram a bunch into the last few weeks. I’ve always been a person who does my best work when my back is against the wall. I ended up treating the classroom like it was a home event. I don’t think about home events, I just get out there and do. It was much appreciate that I had seven students who I had taken on field trips keep in touch with me. They said that they valued my advice, it was solid but most of all they appreciated the fact that I treated and talked to them like adults.
I’ve always known and respected the value of mentoring. These past four months have just reinforced that belief. I had several people who were responsible for me getting to the point I am now. Being a mentor myself is my way of thanking them. Perhaps I will inspire someone to get into my field or at the least push them to challenge themselves. I certainly hope so.
“The End” can also apply to my degree. As I finish this blog, I have finished all the requirements of my MBA. I remember when I first started, I felt overwhelmed. On the third day I was thinking you are working 90+ hours a week, you have all these duties for work and you haven’t been in school for 18 years. What the hell was I thinking? However, I settled down, set up a schedule of when I was going to do everything and stuck to it. It was always easy but then again nothing worthwhile comes easy. Well I hope you have enjoyed reading my blogs. If I can help you in anyway, please contact me. Peace.
