After nearly five months of planning and waiting, the NCAA Midwest Super Regional Wrestling Championships are finally here. The hardest part of this meet was the planning. There were so many things to get done such as getting workers, making sure we had enough mats, arranging lodging and security among others. At times, it was a frustrating task as Joey (Simcoe, wrestling head coach) and I did about 95% of the work. Having been through this before, I told Joey that this was the hardest part.
Once the tournament actually starts, it runs itself as long as the planning is done. That is exactly what happen. As the tournament director, my job was running the floor. I had to make sure that there were five workers at each table (5 tables total) for all matches. At the start of the day, I would call out matches in order of wrestling, on deck (next up) and in the hole (waiting to be on deck). I had three runners who would get the bout sheets after a match was finished.
When I got a sheet, I would then call out the next “in the hole” match. The runners were also responsible for taking the sheets up to the press box so they could be entered into the website. If I needed anything, my runners would take care of it. Our athletic director, Lonny Allen, was also on hand to help out when needed. The worse problem we had was when Joey yelled at me for 20 seconds about an announcement I didn’t make when he felt I should of.
Once the wrestling was over, the job wasn’t done. I got results and went back to my office to post them and send to all the schools, the NCAA and the various media. I wrote our story, posted and sent
