The last week has been spent focusing on classroom issues. I’m still finalizing the test for the SRM 291 class. In COM 235 I had the opportunity to actually teach. We discussed bad sport promotions and ways that it could had been improved. I mentioned Disco Demolition night. In 1978, the Chicago White Sox had a promotion where they were burning disco records on the field after an inning. The following year the Cleveland Indians had dime beer night. The end result was that because of fan behavior and field conditions, the games could not be finished and both teams forfeited the game.
As I told the class, the purpose was to stress the importance of good planning. On the surface, offering beer for a dime would help draw people in. However, there was no thought as to how the beer would affect behavior. It’s all in the planning.
