Okay the header is a bit of a joke. I was representing Tiffin at the Bowling Green State University Student Job Fair. A few days before, I had made a comment about how I got to travel on my birthday as the fair was on my birthday. Dr. Tiell then replied well there is my birthday gift to you. Thanks Bonnie!!
I had a group of six students that traveled with me in the van. The hardest aspect was actually finding where to park. The one lot we were told was full and there were maybe two signs about the fair at all. We found our spot and had a bit of journey to find the right place as BGSU did not do a very good job with directing people to the ballroom.
Eventually, we found the ballroom and set up out table. We had a really nice Tiffin banner and TU brochures, which I have to thank Nikki Hintze, the Director of Graduate & Distance Education Student Services at TU. Lindsay Colman (a student at Tiffin) and I manned the table answering any questions that people may have had.
It was an interesting experience as I had never been a spokesperson before. I mean, I am as I represent schools with my writing and employment. I had never been put in a recruiter type role before. It was different and exciting. Since Lindsay and I are both students at TU, we were able to allow the students to gain insight into Tiffin.
We were busier than we thought we were. I had brought about 35 flyers with our graduate assistant and intern positions and contacts. We had to have the coordinators of the job fair print more for us, because we ran out. I also collected about 20 resumes or so, which is a good thing. Lindsay was just outstanding and very professional.
I thought overall, the job fair was worth the trip. The room they are it in was fairly large with a beautiful set-up. There is definitely room to grow and if they can take care of directions and parking, this will be a very good event and will grow.
After the fair was over, the students and I went out to lunch. The relaxed setting allowed them to be really open with their thoughts. I got more perspective into who they are and what they want to do with their lives. All in all, it was a great day and we didn’t have bad weather to deal with!
