This website is about my experiences during SRM 670 – Sport Mentorship. My mentoring page will talk more about what it is. Taking this class is the last thing I have to do to get my MBA in Sports Management. It’s been an interesting journey, not only in coming to Tiffin but getting to this final class.
It all started in May of 2011. At the time I was working at Oakland University and I had gone as far as I could there. I sent an email out to several of my friends in the sports information field asking them to let me know of any openings. I got a call from Shane O’Donnell, the Sports Information Director at TU. He asked if I had ever thought about getting an MBA because he had a graduate assistant position open. After much thought, I decided it was a win-win situation for both of us.
In 1997, I had started a Masters at Bowling Green but left after the first semester. Naturally, my dad wanted to know what was going to be different this time. The first time, I was just getting the degree to just have one. This time around, I realized what the MBA could do for me personally and professionally. I was committed to making it a success.
Near the end of the first week of class, I had a moment of “panic”. Here I am, working 90 hours a week, cramming 14 weeks of work into seven weeks and I hadn’t been in school for 18 years. What the heck was I thinking? That didn’t last long and I got down to using time management to get through.
The trip to getting to this mentorship has been interesting as well. During the course of the 2012-13 school year, I contacted three different people about my mentorship. Each of them would have been great to work for except they wanted me to come to their location. They were all out of state and with my job it just couldn’t be worked out. I was at a quandary until I ran into Dr. Bonnie Tiell this past December and she volunteered to be my mentor.
It’s been an interesting ride through the two years of classes. I have no doubt my mentorship will be just as interesting. I have my seat belt on and am ready for the ride!
